My favourite age is from 9 days old. Babies are still fresh, sleepy and more flexible to have those curly baby poses for your newborn photos. 

However for the parents, the first week is a rollercoaster trying to settle at home- Your breastmilk  is coming in if you are breast-feeding and you will have home nurse visits during that first week as well.

I always suggest parents to wait until they have settled home and to get in touch to organise their session once ready. I have the flexibility to the photoshoot within that week of getting in touch.  

Some parents might want to wait a little longer than 9 days before getting out of their house. It sure took me a while before I left my house for the first time therefore I totally understand. 

After 2 weeks old, babies are more alert, less sleepy and not as flexible for those curly baby poses. However it is still a sweet age to photograph them still so little. 

Newborn sessions are done in my studio in Endeavour Hills. They are in the morning as babies and parents are a lot fresher in the morning. 

I also offer in-home session if you prefer the baby poses to happen in the comfort of your own home- especially after having a cesarean section. 

It is totally up to parents and how they feel when organising their newborn portrait session. 

My baby poses for your newborn photos are all about capturing the genuine emotion and authentic connection between the family members. I have a variety of images during the session between mum, dad, Bub and all the siblings. There is an extra fee for additional extended families like grand parents.

FAMILY OF FIVE

Family of FIVE with K & T’s cherubs.

I met these guys the year before with them as FOUR for their family photoshoot. You can check out their photography session here.

Your babies are really precious. Your moments with them is everything. So is the importance of capturing your family together. Images can freeze the precious of moments to cherish forever.

We were meant to have K’s maternity before this newborn session. However Covid had different plans that put us into lockdown for a few months. This newborn session felt right on time once we were able to photograph again.

I loved seeing this family again, this time as FIVE with their baby girl L. It was full of wrestling with their two boys, full of energy but also full of love. I’m looking forward to photograph the next chapter in their family.

WHEN YOU SEE A FAMILY GROW

It is such a warm feeling when you see a family grow through my photos.

These guys came in the studio for their first pregnancy and their first newborn session with Baby H. You can find their pregnancy shoot here and their newborn session here. And oh my, how has Baby H has grown since then!

When S got in touch with me to organise their newborn photoshoot for their growing family, I was so excited to have them back. However 2020 was a year full of surprises. Covid-19 had different plans for all of us.

Baby I had her baby session in the studio as an older newborn baby. Older newborn babies are really sweet. You can see their personally shine through and I also love capturing the connection with them older babies with their parents and siblings. Baby H, the big brother was too busy discovering. Toddlers are also lots of fun, they don’t always want to sit still because they love exploring.

 NEWBORN PORTRAITS FOR A NEW FAMILY

 Newborn portraits for a new family welcoming their first son.

Expecting a child is a wonderful moment to experience. However Covid and ISO have made this experience to the next level!

P & D’s experience from being pregnant with Baby D to giving birth to him was very  different due to Covid 19.  P had to go through appointments on her own. D couldn’t be with her most of the time as he wasn’t allowed in the room. No Pre antenatal classes, no mid wives appointments, no ultrasound appointments.  Giving brith was also another story, visits to hospital was every limited. It is an experience they will never forget. And a story to tell their first born son D.

Newborn portrait sessions are best done best captured between 5-10 days old. Babies are more relax, sleepy and easier to resettle.  Older babies are more alert and awake, not as flexible for certain poses. Either way, it always depends on when mum and dad are ready to come in for their photography session. But also when baby is ready. Baby D was a bit jaundice so we waited a bit before doing his session. However he was a champion sleeping most of the time, after having a big big feed.

This was my last newborn session before lockdown 2.0 was put into place. It was such a crazy time to get our head around however I’m glad we manage to get these precious newborn capture for this new family during this crazy Covid time.

FAMILY PORTRAITS WITH A NEW BABY GIRL

Family portraits with a new baby girl. These new parents had their maternity session done in the studio few weeks earlier.

You can find their maternity session here. And now they are back with their precious Baby I.

Baby I was born just a little while after the Covid restrictions were lifted. And it was great timing to do her newborn session.

As soon as I met this precious girl, I knew she would suit this flora baby muslin wrap.

She slept through her newborn session, making her portrait session stress free and a lot of fun to capture. Her family will have precious images to cherish Baby I so little. Just priceless.

Newborn portraits are done in my studio based in Endeavour Hills (3802), in the morning with a beautiful natural light. And are generally about 2-3 hours.

M is wearing couple dresses from my dress collection I have available for my mums.

I really enjoyed capturing M & A’s journey, from their maternity session to their newborn portrait with their new family of three.

A FAMILY WITH A NEW BABY GIRL

A session with a family their new baby girl.

This session was done just in time before lockdown 2.0 was put into place.

I remember listening to the Premier on the radio, on my way to a family session. And he announced another lockdown. My head did a big 360 turn with all mixed emotions. I could NOT believe we were into a second wave.

That evening talking to B about her newborn session. It was the next day and we were still excited for it despite that huge announcement!

The newborn session went well. Baby M didn’t fall asleep straight away but she eventually did. And we got beautiful images her sleeping beauty.

Anyone pregnant or giving during Covid 19 would have a crazy experience in hospital. However B and D were really lucky as Baby M arrived in between the 2 lockdown. It still would have been an one to remember.

Big brother L did really well during his session. He was such a beautiful caring and patient boy. Luckily, I have a playground just around the corner from my studio, so that kids can stretched their legs a little bit while mum and baby are getting their portraits taken.

During this ISO 2.0, sessions are paused until restrictions are lifted. However I can NOT wait to get back to it and create beautiful images for my clients!

HOW TO PHOTOGRAPH YOUR NEWBORN IN HOME

To all the parents to be, expecting a child very soon, in the next uncertain few months, I’m sorry.

To my families who booked a maternity session and/or a newborn session with me, I’m sorry.

I’m sorry that this Covid 19 has taken literally everything away from us. It has also taken the opportunity to capture this important milestone in your families life.

While there is a ban on non essential travel, please be safe and sane. It is a difficult time, your family needs to be safe and my little family also.

As a photographer and a mother, I understand how hard and frustrating this situation is. So whilst we can’t photograph your precious moments, my good friend Cat from Sapphire and Stone Photography (who is also a mum of 3 and photographer) and I have brainstormed together and put a blog post for not only our clients who are missing out on photoshoots, but also for ALL the new parents who will be missing out, while Covid 19 is still around.

With this post, we will help you create your own newborn images from home. Give you some tips on how to photograph your newborn in home.

Here are some top photography tips for you, to guide you as best we can;

HOW OLD?

– For the relax and sleepy shots, newborn babies are best captured between 5-10 days old.

– Older newborn babies are more alert, therefore you will have more awake images in your gallery.

– In the morning after a full feed is always the best time to start your shoot. A baby with a full belly will be happy and sleepy. This will give you more time and a greater likelihood of having sleepy images regardless of their age.

WHEN?

– The best time to photograph your newborn baby is in the morning while everyone is fresh and in their best mood.

Usually around 10am.

WHERE?

–  To photograph your newborn, choose a room where you have the best morning light.

– When shooting in home, the rooms generally used are the parents bedroom, the baby’s room or the lounge room. However, in this post, I will show you examples from my studio, that has a bedroom type setup.

Here is is below;

THINGS TO CONSIDER:

– We strongly advise AGAINST any poses that only professional photographers know how to do. Some newborn poses are mainly post edited in photoshop and are NOT safe to apply. Some types of heavily posed newborns are only done by professional photographers that know exactly how to manipulate babies in a safe and correct way. In this post, you will have examples of easy and simple images you can take.

– A warm house for your little one to be comfortable while taking images. My studio is generally set at 24-25 degrees. If you have a larger room, slightly warmer.

– Turn all your house light off, only use your light from the window.

– Your photoshoot may take a couple hours get a few images. Don’t despair – we know it’s hard work! But keep trying as long as your baby and your family is happy. If it’s simply not working, try a little later, or tomorrow.

OK Let’s get started. I have a Stand In Baby as my baby model, with my children for sibling images, also adding images from previous sessions for you to see.

SET UP AND LIGHTING

– One of my favourite rooms to photograph your newborn baby in is in the bedroom. Most of the time, the bed is close to a window, on a 90 degree angle. If your room is not set up similar, try getting a hand to re position furniture in a way that works for this shoot.

– This set up provides great soft lighting.

– Place yourself where the round spots are in the diagram below, and direct your camera/phone to the window.

– Use a plain blanket to wrap baby in and also use blankets to use as backdrop. The one I’m using is from Kmart.

– Declutter things in the background.

– Use white noise during your session. It helps settle the baby during your photoshoot. There are plenty of apps you can use.

CAMERA SETTINGS

– If you are using a DSLR, have your settings on AUTO. The camera will do all the work for you.

– Avoid using the flash camera

– MACRO settings for close up images (Try to position the little details close to the window for these macro/up close shots. The light will allow for an image that pops your subject, rather than creating a dull lit, ‘flat’ image in shadows.)

WITH SIBLINGS

– If there are siblings involved, I always start with them first. Then they can go and play for a little while.

– Don’t stress too much if they don’t want to cooperate at first. Even my children don’t always play nice with me. But I try to engage with them and make it fun for the siblings. (Bribery works well!)

– With siblings, I always put Baby closest to the window.

– Don’t stress too much if they don’t want to cooperate at the beginning or even wanting to look into the camera. Get them to do something, like giving you a kiss, rubbing noses together softly, or getting them to show you where the baby’s nose is. Another cute shot is when you ask them to whisper a ‘secret’ into baby’s ear.

– Photograph from above or where those rounds spots are in the set up photo. Squat down, and then stand up and vice versa for different perspectives.

– Here are 2 examples.

BABY WITH MUM OR DAD

– Mum and dad can alternate to take photos of one another with baby and siblings. Again, sitting on the bed all together. Where the window is on a 90 degree angle.

– Again, snap away with different angles; straight on, sides and up, close and pulled back.

– It is all about the connection, holding your baby and the interactions with your other children and lots of kisses.

– To get even more intimate, ask Dad to take off his shirt and show off his amazing Dad bod! Place baby on his chest with only a wrap on, creating lots of skin on skin contact. This allows an image show more connection between subjects.

– Get Dad to stand above you while you are breastfeeding, or bottle feeding your new babe. It is an angle that creates interest. Make sure you are facing the window for this one or on a slight 45 degree angle off the side of the bed.

FAMILIES

– This one will be a bit tricky to achieve. However if you have a tripod to set your camera on or a self timer phone, you can place it where these spots are using a chair or side table. It will be the best angles to achieve images like these ones.

THE BABY

– Baby can also be taken by him self, posed on your bed.

– Notice the 2 angles below, baby can be posed on your bed in these positions.

– The light from your window should hit on your baby’s face from the side, always at a 90 degree angle or from above. This creates beautiful shaded light on your baby’s face.

– Also get all the little details, their eyes, their hands, and the ones that we love the most are the little toes.

– Photograph from a birds eye view, the side. And also photograph your newborn close in and further away. But not too far to constantly spot your baby. NEVER leave them unattended or stand further away than 1 meter at all times. Make sure that someone is close by watching to keep baby extra safe.

– Here some example on safe simple poses with baby on his/her back. And gently move his/her head.

While taking all of these photos of your baby and new family, you may find that Baby will need a break. She/he will stir for a feed, a nappy change or more cuddles to settle them back to sleep.

Please do NOT try to pose baby in any fancy ways you see from professional photographers. These would be 2 images merged together in photoshop, to create an effect of 1 single image. One of the safest poses would be the ones of baby on his/her back.

Hang in there guys! I know there is an end to this crazy situation and we will soon be able to be our normal selves.

While the ban on non essential travel is on and we are in isolation, I will be happy to help you during your session via video chat. Or alternatively, I will be happy to edit your images FREE of charge, whether you are taking your images from a DSLR or your phone. This includes basic editing with colours, lighting and cropping.

 This applies whether you want your session in the studio or exploring and rediscovering our beautiful Melbourne again!

IN HOME NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY WITH THEM

In home newborn photography with them, in their Southbank home.

I had the pleasure to photograph Z & T’s maternity session in my studio a couple weeks prior to this session. Come and check their studio maternity session here. Z was 38 weeks pregnant and had that beautiful pregnancy glow.

These guys wanted a newborn session in the comfort of their own home in Southbank. In home session is a service that can definitely book if you guys can’t make it to my studio in Endeavour Hills.

I understand sometimes it is difficult to get out of your home with a just born baby. Sometimes, it is more due to tradition and religion to not be able to bring your newborn baby out of your home. So I will bring my gear, blanket and fabric to have your session at your home.

Baby A was such a good little girl, sleeping for her newborn portraits. We did her shoot in couple hours. I photographer her and her newborn feels and also the love and connections her parents have with her as a new family of 3.

It was such a pleasure to have photographed Z & T’s journey to parenthood from maternity to newborn. I offer a bundle package when you book your pregnancy and newborn session with me.

TWINS NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY WITH DOUBLE THE LOVE

Twins newborn photography with double the love for this family of five.

I photographed A & D’s maternity with her twins a bit before Christmas. You can find their pregnancy shoot here.

Having the twins is something very wonderful. Australian Multiple Birth Association is  a great support for family expecting multiple babies.

During your newborn portrait session, siblings are welcome and are a MUST. I also photograph your family and have different combination images between all the members; siblings together, baby by him/herself, mummy with her babies, daddy with her babies and more.

When these guys arrived in the studio, the twins needed a feed. While getting feeding, I photographed big sister M, she was pretty excited. Once I captured the big siblings with their newborn baby(ies), daddy can take them to the playground I have around the corner from my house. During that time, the twins were photographed by themselves and with mummy. When D came back with big sister M, we took more family photos. I just couldn’t believe how the twins slept through during their newborn session.

 do a variety of images between all the members. And also have lots of family images as well.

These guys will have beautiful newborn and family images for them from 3 to 5.

It was such a pleasure to have photographed A & D’s journey from maternity to newborn twins.  Pregnancy and newborn bundle package is available when you book both your sessions with me.
